SNOW


We have had more snow this winter than I have ever seen in this part of Japan. Still not as much as I'm used to back home, but it came as a shock to get so much snow here. Fortunately, shovelling is still rarely needed, because the snow usually melts within a day.

And our good friend Lydia dropped in too. Did she bring the snow? Probably. Her and Tara sure enjoyed playing in it!
Strange Japanese snow play fact: Japanese snowmen consist of only 2 balls (head and body), unlike their three-balled Western counterparts. I guess it's a height thing?

The usual lineup of bicycles at the train station, slowly being buried under the snow. On the upside, it keeps your groceries fresh when you put them in your basket.

It was a fun few days, and now she'a back at Columbia University in New York. But we will be seeing her again in a few months, at some kind of wedding that's taking place this fall.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Another year has begun. New Year's Eve is a big family holiday here, much more like Christmas for many people in Canada - a day to stay home with your family, and eat a traditional annual feast. Christmas, oddly, is more like Valentine's Day - as in, a day on which you're not supposed to be without a date. Anyway, expecting that everyone would be at home with their families, we didn't expect to find much excitement on New Year's Eve. We ended up finding some pretty big parties, though! The most interesting action was happening at the largest local temple. After the countdown at a bar, we wandered over to the temple to find a full on festival happening. People selling food, having drinks, keeping warm by large bonfires, walking through rings of fire to purify themselves at the start of the new year, and making the all important first prayer of the year. Tara and I fortunately had one lucky 5 yen coin between us, and tossed it in for good luck in the coming year. So far, so good!

The winter holiday gave us time to try skiing. Probably the first time in more than 10 years for both of us! Don't be fooled by my confident pose, Tara is the superior skier. In fact, she gave me a few lessons on the bunny hill runs before we tried the steeper slopes.

The snowy mountain. It goes up and up and up into the fog. It was beautifully mystical, shrouded in fog, and covered in snow.

Mmm, delicious looking, frosted trees in Nagano prefecture. Nagano really resembles Canada. It made me feel kind of like I had gone back home for the afternoon. But we also had much more snow in Ichinomiya this year than any other year that I have lived here. (Photos in following post).


Makin' Mochi

How to Make Mochi (Japanese Rice Sweets)

Put the steamed rice in the large, stone, mortar. Pound repeatedly until it turns into a sticky, solid mass, resembling dough.

Continue to turn the pounded rice over upon itself, and pound. Pound, pound, pound!
Try to refrain from breaking the hammer, like I did.

Roll the giant rice dough ball into a flat sheet on a lightly floured cutting board. Cut into smaller squares. Fill the squares with sweet red bean paste. Roll into a small ball, with the red bean paste in the centre.

Your arms will become very tired from making mochi. Remember to stretch thoroughly before beginning.

Be careful not to hit your friends with the hammer. Mochi making is a fun Japanese tradition if you keep these simple rules in mind!

Christmas in Japan


Ok, so what is Christmas like in Japan?

Well, everyone is definitely AWARE of Christmas here. If you wander into a mall, you might even mistake it for a Western mall - pictures of Santa Claus and snowflakes on shop windows, etc. But culturally, it's definitely different.

Here, New Year's Day seems to be the most important family holiday. On New Year's Eve (my students tell me) mothers are very busy preparing special dishes to be eaten on New Year's Day. Christmas, on the other hand, is not a family holiday, but more like Valentine's Day in the West - a night on which you DON'T want to be without a date! Restaurants are packed, and often offer special 2 person set course meals.

We had to really work at creating a Christmas atmosphere in the apartment, but with the affordable video rentals (100 yen - about $1/week!), and mini Christmas tree, it was a solid success.

One lucky girl got the cutest, fuzziest, little pyjama set you've ever seen.

And of course it wouldn't feel like Christmas without a traditional Christmas dinner. We don't have an oven here, but we were fortunately able to find a tasty roast chicken.

Incidentally, in Japan, Colonel Sanders (Yes, THE Colonel of KFC fame) is actually a Christmas icon. It's pretty rare to find turkey in Japan, but apparently with his chicken, white beard, and red logo, The Colonel has become a major part of Christmas in Japan. We fortunately did NOT have to eat KFC for Christmas, but many students have told me that to them… Christmas means KFC.

Superman in the Kitchen

One thing we don't find a lot of here is RICH food. So once in awhile we start to get a craving… real cheese, bacon, creamy rich sauces… mmmm….

So when Tara suggested making a macaroni and cheese casserole the other day, I couldn't resist. I have to say it turned out pretty well, if I do say so myself. But that's just the kind of Superman, I am.

My new apron (acquired at a recent Christmas gift exchange) hints at my alter ego.
I was very surprised that such an accurate image of my real body would be printed on an apron here in Japan, but there you have it… Yup, that's pretty well what I look like under the apron. Now you know.

鍋 (nabe)


Another great way to stay warm during the cold winters, nabe is a hot pot set in the centre of the table. Gather your best friends around the table for a night of eating, drinking, and merriment.

Get all the prep work done first - fresh cut vegetables, wontons, cubed tofu, thin strips of meat, and noodles - and you're ready to embark on a fantastic and fulfilling evening.

Here are Matt, Erina, Dave, and Parren, in the pre-nabe phase. Having just come out of the cold, everyone was happy to sit under the kotatsu (see previous post) and stroke this prized Cookie Monster pelt.

The pot is filled a little bit at a time, stretching the dinner into a multi-course meal. In my opinion, it's the ideal way to eat. Everyone taking a small bowl at a time, continuing on for hours.

But the best part is definitely the conversation, and shared time with our friends.

火燵

There is no better way to warm up in winter than with a 'kotatsu.' The kotatsu is a brilliantly simple invention. A table with a blanket under the table's surface, and a small space heater affixed to the underside of the table. Breakfast or dinner, the kotatsu is the way to keep warm this winter. Especially since central heating doesn't seem to exist over here!

Sunday morning. Blueberry pancakes. Coffee. Kotatsu.
Perfect!

And in the evening, you ask? Homemade gyoza (fried pork dumplings), a couple cans of Super Prime beer flavoured alcohol, some rice, and of course slip under the kotatsu blanket. You'll be feeling warm and sleepy in no time!

Mmmm…. Ian's homemade gyoza! I have to say they were pretty tasty little things.

And besides making food, and staying cozy under the table, I have also been trying to regain my Japanese ability. Studying Japanese writing is a long, hard journey. On top of the two separate phonetic alphabets, one is expected to learn 2000 of the more difficult 'kanji' (Chinese characters) to be considered acceptably literate. I think I can read about 80 so far… I'll let you know how that goes.

Ian Flies a Spaceship

Right. So, before we left these folks (see below), we made one last great, North American road trip to the surprisingly futuristic town of Seattle.

Not seen here, Meaghan (photographer) and Kevin (who met up with us later). This was the night before we left for SEATTLE.

Seattle, unbeknownst to most, is a city obsessed with space exploration. They even have their own super-powered, space invader repulser laser cannon known as the "Space Needle."

However, of much greater interest to me, was this super futuristic space ship docking bay (which incidentally doubles as a music museum and experiment lab, as well as a science fiction museum). Within these walls was some of the most incredible space technology, as well as a really cool music recording section where you could take mini lessons on guitar, piano, drums, and vocals, or record yourself in the free-style jam studio. We do have video of our 'family band jam session,' which I might share with you after I review the recording quality.

I was allowed to take it out for a test flight, however this video footage was lost in the ensuing crash landing. Still, one of the highlights of any trip I've taken thus far!

With that, it was time to fly (sadly not via viper) across the Pacific, and to continue our adventures in Japan.

Japanese Sandwiches

Japanese sandwiches are, for the most part, hugely disappointing. For the usual reasons (hunger, and it was lunch time) I bought a sandwich this afternoon. It was a typical "mix-sando" featuring 3 half sandwich triangles: egg, ham, and tuna. the bread was approximately 7mm in width, plain white, with the crust sliced off. Leaving 3 perfectly triangular little pieces in the triangular package. Between each 2 pieces was roughly 1 teaspoon of sandwich filling. The tuna sandwich actually had a single green leaf on it… this went beyond the standard. Greens, as we know them in the west, are hard to come by in Japan.

Bread and cheese. Those are two things you'll miss if you live in Japan. You will, however, enjoy a great variety of noodle and rice dishes. Salad, however, is almost exclusively a pitiful looking mixture of sliced cabbage, corn, and mayonnaise. Oh, also mayonnaise is on everything. At least, far more things than you ever imagined putting mayonnaise on. On the upside, Japanese mayonnaise is much better than the western variety. Who woulda thought that mayonnaise was a Japanese specialty? Now if only they could learn how to make a sandwich...

West Coast Stopover


After saying our "See you next year"s in Ontario, Tara and I headed to Vancouver to catch up with our siblings and friends. Vancouver is a beautiful city, and always has an interesting range of things to do. The air is clean and crisp, and it just feels like a healthy place to be.

On my first night in town we caught up with Kevin. He was having a wild house party/music festival in his basement apartment! We listened to some great music, met a lot of cool people, and had some laughs. I hope they got the mustard out of the floor though!

GO GO public transportation!

What's this, you ask? It's a Japadog. Yes, Vancouver is home to a bizarre fusion restaurant that combines traditional American food (the hotdog) with Japanese toppings, such as seaweed, or soba noodles. In this picture you can see the tasty nori-dog (sprinkled with strips of seaweed paper).

Japadog gets the peace-sign of approval. The peace sign is ubiquitous in Japanese photographs. Why? I haven't quite figured that out yet. It may have something to do with the fact that the Japanese word for "2" is pronounced "nee." Saying "nee" while your picture is being taken, is similar to the English "CHEESE" - stretching one's face into a broad smile. The Japanese photographer will count 1 - 2, and snap the photograph on '2'. Anyway, that's just a theory… I have also heard many Japanese photographers say 'cheese' while taking a picture, but unfortunately 'cheese' in Japanese is pronounced 'cheeZU,' thus forming an awkwardly unattractive face with the lips pushed outward.

While in the Japadog shop, I had the chance to practice a bit of Japanese, much to the shock of the staff there. Ohhh, my Japanese feels rusty! I better get some more practice in before we have to rely on it for survival again.

Fall Farewells


Autumn has come again, the leaves are not the only things changing. After a long year of study and work in London (that's London, ONTARIO), Tara and I find ourselves saying goodbyes again; we are on our way to Japan again.

There never seems to be enough time to spend with all of our friends and loved ones, but the times we do have, we make the most of. Here is a small collage of our fall farewells.
